Truckin' Delicious

MOBILE APP

Enhancing the food truck experience between customer and vendor

THE PROJECT

As this was an independent project for my directed studies course, I did everything from beginning to end. I conducted the initial research on Vancouver’s food truck culture, designed the app, created the prototype and facilitated all the participant studies.

INITIAL RESEARCH

I conducted research on Vancouver’s food truck culture by interviewing customers and vendors in the downtown area using IDEO methods. I also learned more about the culture through online sources. From this preliminary research, I learned that Vancouver ‘s food truck culture has been growing due to the diversity of multicultural food and the moderate weather temperatures that encourage people to roam the streets of downtown.

EXPERIENCE MAPPING

By observing how customers and vendors interact, I saw issues and opportunities that allowed for an intervention. I visualized this experience by creating a journey framework.

USER PERSONAS

Through my observations and interviews with both customers and vendors, I also got a better understanding of their goals, behaviours, needs and qualities. The personas below show this information.

IDEATION & RESEARCH

I brainstormed potential design interventions from the observations and interviews conducted in the initial research. In the end, an optimized mobile application seemed to be the most suitable for the food truck context. Therefore, I looked at the existing mobile applications for food trucks – Street Food app and Eat St. app. We found that both these apps did not fully complement the food truck experience.

WIREFRAMES & MOCKUPS

My goal was to design an app that not only met the needs of the customers, but also reflected the spontaneous and fun nature of vendors. Ultimately, my designed app would be optimal in enhancing the food truck experience. I aimed to portray the vendor's qualities through the app's visual design, language and interactions.

PROTOTYPE

I created an interactive prototype using Axure to demonstrate the flow and interactions of the app. Some mockup screens were excluded from this prototype, as it didn’t fit in the immediate experience of purchasing food from a vendor.

USER TESTING

With the interactive prototype, I conducted user studies with both customers and vendors in Vancouver downtown. Participants were given a walkthrough of the prototype and screenshots, and then asked for their feedback.

FINAL RESEARCH PAPER

For the final deliverable, I wrote an academic paper on this design project and the results I gained from testing my app on food truck customers and vendors. From the user testing, I found that this app did have the potential to enhance the food truck experience given some improvements.
